Teaching Treasures: A Broader Education
I remember heading up to books to sit my final A-Level History paper. It was a misty morning, and I felt a quiet pre-exam apprehension as I walked out of Beloe’s. I arrived at School early and stepped into Chantry cloister. I sat down to give my...

'Douglas! I heard you were going to… Winchester? Never heard of it. My da said it was quite a good school, but Douglas – it can’t be that good of a school if… you’re going there??' Thus (quite without malice) a former schoolmate reacted to my 1988...

The Paddy Dear Award
Nearly 650 years ago William of Wykeham had a vision: to promote education in England and to create an institution that would endure. More prosaically, 52 years ago I was a chubby, spotty 13-year-old at Winchester College on a bursary that helped...

Proud to play my part
How could I explain my job at Winchester College to someone outside? It’s unlike any other position I’ve ever had. I first came as a contractor, rewiring Chawker's ready for James Hodgins to take over as Housemaster in 2009. I remember sitting down...

Warden’s Report

Over five years ago, the Governing Body laid out a strategy for Winchester College. Our goals were to see the School admit girls in VIth Book, grow to 900 pupils over a period of 6 - 8 years, and increase access via a growing bursary programme.

Headmaster’s Message

As will be clear from the last few issues of the Journal, despite many headwinds Winchester’s vision of education is thriving.

Bursar's Report

When reflecting on how to best prepare my first annual report, I thought it prudent that I looked at how my immediate predecessors had approached the task.

Director of Development's Report

It is not often that the national media shines its light on an individual donation made to an individual British school, but that is exactly what happened this spring when Paddy Dear (C, 1974 - 79) was interviewed by The Times about his endowment of the Paddy Dear Bursary Award.

SUPPORT US

Winchester College only exists as we know it today thanks to the generous support of those named over the next few pages, and the many generations of donors who have come before us, going right back to our Founder, William of Wykeham, in 1382. Our pupils past, present and future cannot thank you enough.
